Still Responding Since 1913
Apparatus 126, a 1913 Seagrave 55-foot city
service ladder truck with a 40-gallon chemical tank, is
Seattle's
oldest surviving motor fire apparatus. It was delivered on October
24, 1913 at a cost of $6550
and placed in service that year with
members of Truck Company 7 to replace their horse-drawn ladder
truck. In its first full year of service, Apparatus 126 was
one of only 10 motor rigs on a horse-drawn
dominated apparatus
roster. All of Seattle's 16 engine companies that were in
service at this time were
still operating with horse-drawn steam pumpers.
During its 55-1/2 years with the Seattle Fire
Department, Apparatus 126 has had several changes made
to it.
In 1919 a new Seagrave 79.9 horsepower engine, radiator, hood and
firewall were installed. It
was completely rebuilt in 1930
with another new Seagrave radiator, hood and firewall, and outfitted
with pneumatic tires. In 1939, its last "modern touches" were
completed with the installation of new
wheels, 4-wheel brakes, and a
windshield!
Apparatus 126 was completely
restored to its 1930 configuration by the Last Resort Fire
Department in 1970. It was a main attraction during the
Seattle Fire Department Centennial celebration in 1989. We
also displayed it at numerous events during its centennial year in
2013.
App. 126 is the
oldest known surviving motorized fire apparatus from the Seattle
Fire Department.
The S.F.D. took
delivery on October 24,
1913.
It holds the
record for the longest service time of any vehicle in the SFD - 55
years, 5 months & 29 days.
The LRFD has owned and cared
for this rig since 1969.
In 2013, we celebrated it's
centennial . . . 100 years.
